How it breaks down:

Facility Rental Fee: $30,000 location fee and a mandatory $30,000 lodging fee, so $60,000 total.

What this includes: The $30,000 location fee gives you use of the property’s 76 acres for four days and three nights, which means you can have your rehearsal dinner, lunches, brunches, and any other event-related activity there. The $30,000 lodging fee provides you 11 bedrooms with room for 21 guests (I’m guessing you can squeeze in one more so there’s room for 11 couples total) for four days and three nights. Services and amenities include:

  • Housekeeping
  • Heated Pool

  • Hot Tub

  • Sauna
  • Pilates Reformer

  • Tennis Court

  • Hiking Paths

  • Historical Farm Complex
  • Beach
  • Wireless Internet

  • 76 Secluded Acres

  • Golf Course Next Door

Food: You will have to bring in your own approved caterer. You can expect prices to range from $100-$200/up for food and beverage depending on your caterer. Caterers can use the manor’s kitchen for small gatherings up to 40 people. Otherwise they will have to set up a portable kitchen on the grounds which can run you several thousand dollars.

More Stats:

Space Type: Inside/outside

Bridal Suite: Yes

Size: Up to 250 guests, with seating for 150 in the barn and 40 in the manor

Food Service Type: Depends on selected caterer

Parking: Yes

How Will Grandma Get There? Up to 21 guests can stay in the manor for a fee of $30,000 for three nights. For guests not staying at the manor, there are several hotels and B&B’s in Hyde Park, Rhinebeck, or Poughkeepsie. The closest train station is in Rhinecliff. Amtrak offers a 95-minute service from Pennsylvania Station to Rhinecliff-Kingston while Metro North offers a 105-minute service from Grand Central Station to Poughkeepsie (a 20 minute drive from the house).

Extras: Tents, tables, chairs, linens, etc. need to be brought in from an outside vendor. You can hire a concierge for an additional $500/day, as well as obtain the services of a private chef for a fee.

Party On!: There is a 12 a.m. noise curfew.

 The Report:

The Locusts on Hudson sits on 76 acres in New York’s Hudson Valley. The Neo-Baroque style manor was built in the 19th century, and is surrounded by tennis courts, a beach, a neighboring golf course, a working farm, and gorgeous meadows. The property is owned by hotelier Andre Balazs,  who bought it in 2004 as a private residence and has since transformed the manor, barn, and entire property. His main initiative in purchasing the grounds was to create a working farm that would allow him to bring that experience to The Standard Grill in NYC.

Woman Getting Married Says:

Who wouldn’t want to get married on a property as gorgeous as this? The price, however, is not for the faint (or broke) of heart. The (semi) good news is that you can offset the lodging part of the cost if you wanted, and have 10+ couples (including you and your husband) stay in the 11 bedrooms on the manor and pay their share, which breaks down to $909/night per room (or $476 per person per room, if two people were staying in it.) With an additional $30,000 location fee on top of the $30,000 lodging fee, it’s still expensive any way you cut it. If you have the money and want to get married at a private, stunning location, this is an amazing choice. I think it would work best for a small, intimate wedding of 22 people or less, so everybody can stay on the property and you don’t have to worry about tents or other expenses.

Wedding Venue: Full Moon Farm

Full Moon Farm

65 Jaycox Road
Medusa, NY 12120
(212) 566-1855
View their website

Average Cost: $30,000

*Average cost for THIS venue is calculated by figuring a 125-person guest list for a Saturday night wedding using standard food/beverage costs and tax and gratuity. Transportation to venue, catering kitchen/equipment, entertainment, decorations, tents, chairs/tables, lighting, etc. are not included. Price is rounded up to the nearest thousand.

How it breaks down:

Facility Rental Fee: $4,950

What this includes: Use of the property on rehearsal day (let’s say Friday) from 9:00-7 p.m. On event day you can start your wedding/setup any time from 9 a.m.-11:00 p.m. Clean up day from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. You are only paying for use of the property and nothing else.

Food: You will have to bring in your own caterer. You can expect prices to range from $100-$200/up for food and beverage depending on your caterer.

More Stats:

Space Type: 1,500 sq. foot covered barn, 17-acres of uncovered land. If you have more than 75 guests the venue recommends you get a tent.

Bridal Suite: If you choose to rent their farmhouse you can get ready there along with your wedding party.

Size: Up to 125 guests

Food Service Type: Depends on selected caterer, but the barn is best for family-style seating.

Parking: All guests must be shuttled to and from the event via a private shuttle service (at your own expense).

How Will Grandma Get There? There are B&B’s in Medusa located within 20 miles of the property, and there is a 4-room guesthouse available for rent at $600/night ($650 night for NYE).

Extras: You will have to bring in your own port-o-potties, and your caterer will have to set up their own kitchen which can cost you several thousand dollars (for a catering tent/generator/equipment, etc. plan on spending between $3-$5,000 extra). The venue created this helpful cost sheet of standard wedding extras, below. Obviously you can choose to save on some areas (such as videographer, photographer, flowers, food, etc.) But if you’re interested in this venue, pay particular attention to the costs of specific items that they’re familiar with around the area, such as shuttle service, planner, potties, and tents. NOTE: You are required to have an experience wedding planner (at least month-of or longer).

Party On!: All guests must be picked up via shuttled by 10:45 p.m. and gone by 11. Music must be turned off by 10:45 p.m.

The Report:

The 1,500 sq. foot barn is on 17 acres overlooking the Hudson Valley, with a view of 15 mountains. It was built in 1790, and also has a 4-bedroom farm house on the property that can be rented out to wedding party guests (see above for rate information). The venue is located 115 miles from New York City. A favorite ceremony location is under an apple tree on the property. The barn is a zero carbon footprint facility and the farmhouse is green-built.

 Woman Getting Married Says:

Let me start off by saying I have a thing against tent weddings, or wedding venues that require a lot of additional equipment. There are SO many extra costs. In fact, I’ll go ahead and tell you that you’re most likely looking at an extra $15,000 for a venue like this just to get a meal served to your guests, before you even start talking about decorations, photographers, and all that other fun stuff. Now that that’s off my chest, having a “farm” wedding can be a great/unique idea if you have the creativity and resources to spend on making it look amazing (or can hire someone who can). Otherwise I personally don’t see the benefit of not only having to worry about transportation to an out-of-the-way destination, but the stress of having to make sure everything (like a kitchen, portable bathroom, tent, lighting, tent flooring) is set up properly and then cleaned up. You’re looking at a lot of extra $$ that I’d personally rather spend on other things. However, if you have your heart set on it, a venue such as this one can be a fun retreat for your guests. You can utilize the property for a rehearsal dinner (rather than renting out a separate space/restaurant) and if your family is based in New York City, it’s a different experience for them. The guest house also looks lovely, and if you don’t use the venue for a wedding, it could be fun for a holiday getaway with family and friends.

Wedding Venue: The Bowery Hotel

The Bowery Hotel

335 Bowery
New York, NY
(212) 505-9100
View their website

Average Cost: $53,000

*Average cost for THIS venue is calculated by figuring a 125-person guest list for a Saturday night ceremony plus 5 hour reception. Transportation to venue, entertainment, decorations, and flowers are not included. Average price includes chairs, linens, gratuity and state sales tax. Price is rounded up to the nearest thousand.

How it breaks down:

Facility Rental Fee: $6,000

What this includes: Use of the the room (The Bowery Terrace) for 10 hours, which includes setup and breakdown time; Setting of all rooms by the hotel housemen, cleaning and maintenance as well as access to their inventory of tables, chairs, white linens, and votives.

Ceremony fee: $10/pp

Food: Gemma restaurant, which is attached to the hotel, provides the catering for this venue. You have choice of seated or buffet.

Sample wedding menu includes:

  • One hour of passed hors d’oeuvres (selection of five, which includes choices such as seared filet mignon on a beet chip, grilled octopus, scottish smoked salmon, and tuscan white bean crostini)
  • First course (choice of two, with options such as baby beet salad, chilled octopus carpaccio, and arugula salad)
  • Main course (choice of three, with options such as grilled organic salmon, sauteed branzino, braised short ribs, and grilled grass-fed steak)
  • Family style dessert (choice of three, with options such as raspberry macaroons, chocolate fudge brownies, and lemon bars)
  • Top-Shelf open bar (grey goose, bombay sapphire, maker’s mark, chivas, prosecco, etc.)
Food/Beverage Price:
4 hours= $260/pp
5 hour=$280/pp

More Stats:

Space Type: 8,000 sq. foot indoor/outdoor area and 2,000 sq. foot wrap-around balcony

Bridal Suite: I would recommend staying overnight in the hotel so you can just get ready there.

Size: 60-200 people

Food Service Type: Buffet/seated options

Parking: Valet, which is not included in the fee. Though, this is New York City—so people will be cabbing it.

How Will Grandma Get There? The venue is a hotel, which is super convenient (although expensive). There are of course a ton of other hotel options in the city, with less expensive options a mere cab ride away.

Extras: Bands can be brought in at no extra cost. However, if you want to bring in your own DJ, there ask that you book their in-house tech in lieu of an equipment rental fee. They will charge $100/hr for the duration of the event, plus one hour setup and breakdown. So for a 5 hour wedding you’re looking at an extra $700.

The Report:

The 17-story hotel opened in 2007, but as soon as you walk inside you would think it had been there forever. With antique oriental rugs, giant fireplaces, vintage tiles, and Edwardian-era furniture, the cozy hotel looks like it’s been around since the turn of the century. It’s a favorite spot for celebs, but you would never know it due to it’s laid-back, intimate, and very comfortable yet chic vibe.

Woman Getting Married Says:

I recently took a trip to NYC for work and stayed in this hotel, and I TOTALLY fell in love with it. Everything from the location, hotel lobby, restaurant, drinks, the room itself, and even the hotel stationary was totally on-point. If you’re looking for a unique NYC venue that’s not only easily accessible for guests but has an extremely intimate and unique vibe, this is the place. The only hitch? It’s pricey. But then again, almost everything in NYC is…so if you’re gonna do it and can afford it, by all means check this place out. I can tell you the food I ate there was great, and the hotel itself is beautiful. I highly recommend it!
