Our Favorite Tom Petty Wedding Song

UPDATE: Tom Petty passed away today at the age of 66. He was truly one of best musicians out there and he and his music will forever be missed. Thanks for all the amazing tunes, Mr. Petty.

I spent last night watching Peter Bogdanovich’s documentary on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Runnin’ Down a Dream, and it was pretty great. You forget just HOW MANY FRIGGIN’ hits Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have. It’s also amazing to realize just how current Tom Petty manages to sound today as well. He might be one of the only artists that gained popularity in the late 70’s and 80’s that is still completely relevant todayhis voice/lyrics/arrangements sound just as good as they did in 1978.

See all of my favorite wedding songs here!

Of course the documentary was filled with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ hits, which included “Here Comes My Girl” from 1979. I think the song would make a super fun processional wedding song, either when your bridesmaids are walking down or when you’re walking down the aisle. It would also make a sweet first dance wedding song.

Listen to the “Here Comes My Girl” above and let me know if you like it for a wedding song or what your wedding song choice is! The lyrics are below:

You know , sometimes, i don’t know why,
But this old town just seems so hopeless
I ain’t really sure, but it seems i remember the good times
Were just a little bit more in focus

But when she puts her arms around me,
I can, somehow, rise above it
Yeah man, when i got that little girl standing right by my side,
You know, i can tell the whole wide world, “shove it, “

Hey, here comes my girl, here comes my girl,
Yeah, she looks so right, she’s all i need tonight

Every now and then, i get down to the end of a day,
I’ll have to stop, ask myself, “what’ve i done?”
It just seems so useless to have to work so hard,
And nothin’ ever really seem to come from it

And then she looks me in the eye, says, “we gonna last forever, “
And man, you know i can’t begin to doubt it
No, because this feels so good and so free and so right,
I know we ain’t never goin’ change our minds about it

Hey, here comes my girl, here comes my girl,
Yeah, she looks so right, she’s all i need tonight

Yeah, every time it seems like there ain’t nothin’ left no more,
I find myself havin’ to reach out and grab hold of somethin’
Yeah, i just catch myself wonderin’, waitin’, worryin’
About some silly little things that don’t add up to nothin’.

And then she looks me in the eye, says, “we gonna last forever, “
And man, you know i can’t begin to doubt it
No, because this feels so good and so free and so right,
I know we ain’t never goin’ change our minds about it.

Hey, here comes my girl, here comes my girl,
Yeah, she looks so right, she’s all i need tonight

This will be my fiancé’s entrance song tomorrow. We couldn’t think of a more fitting song and sentiment.

This song was a must play at our wedding. Most of the guests took a break as they thought it was a “chill” song but my husband and I ran to the dance floor and rocked it out. We love you Tom!
