The benefits of natural skincare are endless – but so are the products, claims, and ingredients. How can a bride-to-be navigate the clean or natural beauty and skincare world without a little guidance? Spoiler alert: you can’t.
But, with a little education and ingredient awareness, you can completely overhaul your existing skincare routine to be more natural, gentle, and eco-friendly, too. If that’s something you’re interested in, we tapped NYC board certified dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner, for his expert insight and product recommendations.
What is natural skincare?
Dr. Zeichner explains that, “Natural skincare products are products that contain active ingredients derived from natural sources.”
It’s important to keep in mind, though, that the FDA does not define the term “natural.” That means “one company’s definition may vary significantly from another’s,” he says.
At first thought, most people may assume that natural skincare products are safer, or better-for-you than traditional products, but Dr. Zeichner warns, “this is a complete myth.”
He says, “Even natural skin care products have been associated with the development of skin allergies or irritation. After all, poison ivy is all natural.”
Good point, Dr. Z!
As far as efficacy goes, natural skincare products can be as equally effective as the more traditional products. The choice to switch between the two is entirely up to you. Though, Dr. Zeichner notes, “Natural skin care is not chemical free, as all skin care products contain chemicals. Even natural skin care products require preservatives to maintain their shelf life and prevent bacterial contamination.”
When asked about his favorite natural lines? Dr. Zeichner mentioned Tata Harper, Innbeauty Project, and Burt’s Bees. Below, find some of our favorite lines and products, too!

KORA Organics
“Having my products be certified organic is important to me, so you know exactly what you’re putting on your skin…because what you put on your skin soaks in!” founder and CEO Miranda Kerr has said of why she decided to start KORA Organics. The line is certified organic through Eco-cert and Cosmos, and clean beauty is at the heart of their philosophy. Their Noni Glow Face Oil is a fan favorite, and is crafted with a potent blend of active ingredients including Noni Fruit Extract, Rosehip oil, Pomegranate Oil and Sea Buckthorn Oil. Another go-to? The Turmeric Brightening and Exfoliating Mask. It uses Rosehip Seeds and Quartz to polish skin while naturally derived enzymes from Papaya and Aspen Bark detox your pores and refine your skin, and it also smells amazing.
Innbeauty Project
As a plastic-negative beauty brand, InnBeauty Project formulates their skincare without over 1400 harmful ingredients. Their products are formulated to be “skincare that’s better for your skin, your wallet, and the planet,” and all are sustainable, non-toxic, vegan and cruelty free. If you’re new to the brand, might we recommend their limited edition Power Up Your Skin kit, which includes their lip oil, daily clarifying cleanser, face mist, moisturizer, and eye mask all in a beautiful, bright coral puffer bag!
Kopari
Everything made by Kopari is made with pure organic coconut oil, sustainably sourced from the Philippines. Their multi-purpose Organic Tropical Coconut Melt not only smells amazing, but is a serious multitasker. You can use it all over – as a body oil, under-eye serum, hair deep conditioner, and more. The only ingredients are organic coconut oil and fragrance (this one smells like Pina Colada!) and it’s a great size, at 5.1 ounces.
Tata Harper
Tata Harper is 100% natural, non-toxic and organic skincare with a focus on efficacy, quality, and purity. They use more than 300 raw ingredients and 43 high performance ingredients from 68 countries, packed at the highest levels of concentration to deliver maximum results. One of their best-sellers, the Clarifying Cleanser, is powered by AHA and BHA and is a game-changer for oily and acne-prone skin. It’s a gel cleanser that foams up, and targets impurities while balancing oil for clearer, more matte skin.
Burt’s Bees
Your favorite lip balm is only a small part of what Burt’s Bees has to offer when it comes to clean products. They’ve been “playing by nature’s rules since 1984” and each of their products are consciously crafted with nourishing ingredients from nature. While they strive for 100% natural origin, all their products are over 95% natural origin, and are formulated without phthalates, parabens, SLS, and petroleum. Plus, they don’t test on animals and are committed to responsible sourcing. One of our favorite products for brides-to-be has to be their Natural Acne Solutions Clarifying Toner which perfectly complements your cleanser. It works to remove anything your cleanser left behind, as salicylic acid helps to reduce your acne and prevent future breakouts, giving you that squeaky-clean feeling!
Mad Hippie
Aside from having a super-fun name, we love Mad Hippie for their natural solutions, as well as their 100% money back guarantee. To make your skincare work while you sleep, we recommend their Triple C Night Serum with reishi, turmeric and cloudberry. It has three forms of Vitamin C and 19 active ingredients to deliver brighter, smoother, healthier-looking skin overnight! Little effort, high reward. Yes, please!
