Even though you might already own a suit, it might not be the right color. Or so you’ll soon find out if you’re planning a wedding (or asked to be in one or even attend one). Same goes for a tuxedo! That is why the topic of wedding or formal attire can be so tricky. From wedding dress codes to bridesmaid and groomsmen attire, the quality of your wardrobe might not be quite up to snuff, which is where companies like Generation Tux come in.
Think of a tuxedo rental and suit rental as a phone-a-friend lifeline for any formal occasion. Whether your wedding invitation calls for black-tie only, or it’s been decided all the groomsmen should wear navy blue suits with a black satin lapel, a tuxedo rental or suit rental is often the best way to go. And the best part? You might not even have to leave your living room to get it.
Why We Like Generation Tux
While there are several companies that rent tuxedos and suits online, Generation Tux has over 2,000 5-star reviews and the history and expertise to back them up: They were founded by Men’s Warehouse guru George Zimmer (who remembers his famous line, “If you don’t look good, we don’t look good?”) in 2015, and he is currently the CEO. Zimmer started the company because he saw first-hand what was wrong with the tuxedo rental and suit rental process, and decided to make a robust online-first option.
We dig more into their process below, but what stands out during your experience with them vs. other companies is their “eTailor” fit technology, which uses an algorithm to determine the perfect fit suit. And while that is great, they also know that nothing’s perfect 100% of the time. Which is why they offer free home try-ons to make sure you’re in the size (and style) you want to be.
(Disclosure: While Generation Tux is a partner of ours, we 100% support and recommend them and all sponsors we work with. Otherwise we wouldn’t work with them!)
How does Generation Tux work?
The process is fairly simple and can be completed in a view minutes. Here’s how it works.
(Note that this is for the actual purchase. To do the home try on, simple click on their “Home Try On” link. and you will be walked through a similar process, however you will not be charged. You will have 48 hours to try on the suit and return it.)
Step 1
Start by viewing their collection of 25+ men’s suit and tuxedo styles. Filter by suit or tuxedo, and choose between black, grey, tan, blue, or brown. (Note that tuxes come in blue, black, and grey).
Step 2
Once you find a style you like, you click onto it’s page and choose whether you want to rent or buy it (both prices are displayed.). Once you make your selection you are then prompted to further customize your suit or tux and add optional accessories, such as a shirt, tie, vest, or pocket square, even belts and shoes.
Step 3
Save your look and enter in your information (such as email and event date if you have it). You will also be prompted to create a password so you can create a dashboard of looks for your entire wedding/wedding party. From here you can also add members of your wedding party and assign each of them looks if you’re ready. Bonus? If 5 people are added and make a purchase (or rental) you get one free rental for the groom. With 7 paying members, the groom gets a free rental and gets to keep it!
Step 4
Next, you will add your measurements (such as height, weight, jean waist, etc.) so their algorithm can do its magic. They will also ask your fit preference (modern vs. slim) which is a great way to make sure you get the look you really want. If it doesn’t fit during your home try-on, they offer free shipping and replacements.
Step 5
Check out and receive your custom look 14 days before your event. Something not quite right? Just reach out to their customer service team to find out next best steps. For any fit issues related to pant or jacket sleeve length, they will reimburse up to $20 for complimentary tailoring.
Step 6
After your event, use the prepaid label and return your wedding suit and accessories within three days. You’re done!
Picking the right style
When trying to decide what look you want for yourself or your wedding party, you’ll want to weigh all factors, such as wedding color palette and time of year. (Read our experts’ advice for finding the right style and color for your groomsmen suits here!)
What we love about the Generation Tux collection is that they have a great mix of suit and tux styles that easily look 10x the price. I also like that you can choose between modern, slim, mens, and even boys’ fits, so theoretically everyone in your wedding party can pick the look they are most comfortable wearing.
On top of that their fabrics are great, and a large collection of their suits and all of their tuxedos are 100% merino wool. They also offer free swatches so you can match your suit or accessory colors to your bridesmaid dresses or other wedding decor.
What are the price ranges?
