Welcome to your new favorite Instagram…or at least mine, anyways!

Married in NY is a collection of amazing photos from Manhattan’s City Hall. With intimate stories behind how the couple met or why they picked City Hall as their wedding venue, it’s a fascinating look at some of the most touching, cool, and beautiful weddings in the city.

Started by photographer Natasha Jahangir (who also has a Tumblr of the same name), the artist recently told Buzzfeed that she got the idea from a former professor who got married at City Hall.

“Last summer he had to go back to get a copy of his marriage certificate,” she said. “He called me right after saying he wanted to discuss an idea with me. He and his wife told me about the time they got married and how it was great going back there and being a part of this incredible energy. That’s when Married in New York was born.”

“I didn’t want it to just be about couples who are in love, but about the changing nature of marriage in the 21st century,” said Jahangir, who said she loves hearing stories about how the couples met, which she sometimes includes. “It’s always wonderful to see couples overcoming all sorts of obstacles to be together, be it immigration issues, homophobia, financial difficulties physical disabilities, history…”

“We met 20 years ago in Detroit at an AIDS Fundraiser and we’ve been together for those 20 years and have two adopted children from Guatemala.”

Why choose New York/City Hall to get married?

“We’re a same-sex couple and we’re not allowed to be married in Ohio so we knew we had to choose a location that would allow us to be married and we decided that we wanted to be efficient with the service.”

“I’m a born and bred New Yorker.”

“And I’m Italian.”

How did you two meet and how was the first date?

“We met through mutual friends. I had a group of Italian friends and when she moved to New York I was introduced to her. I don’t think we went on dates per se, we just sort of started hanging out as friends before anything romantic…”

“Yeah and it just happened, it was very natural..”

“Exactly, we got so comfortable and fell in love and trust each other and we have this bond that is just beyond anything I’ve ever been a part of.”

Why choose City Hall/ New York to get married?

“We are going to have a celebration this evening but this was just convenient.”

“Also, we’re young, we’re in motion and we’re not stuffy. We don’t believe in waste per se, with so many people starving in the world we didn’t want to show off. Our love isn’t about showing off it’s about being together.”

What is the best advice that you’ve been given or realized on your own about life?

“The most important thing is trust and keeping someone’s trust.”

“And not to force it. When it’s working, it’s actually working and everything takes care of itself.”

“We first met through friends and then we also found out that we went to the same school.”

How was your experience getting married at City Hall?

“Oh my god, it was so beautiful.”

“Beautiful and so touching. She cried and I almost forgot to answer. The Justice of the Peace was so warm and friendly and it was… marvelous.”

“It was just a really lovely experience.”

“It was our one and only…. after 27 years.”

Why the decision to get married at City Hall?

“Oh please… we’re New Yorkers. We have no money. It was the most reasonable thing to do. This is marriage on the less expensive as opposed to the cheap.”

“Are we your first blind couple?”

Yes!

“I LOVE IT.”
