Wedding cake design can have a tendency to go from cool to cheesy…fast. That’s why it can be so hard to find a wedding cake that looks unique and professional without going over the top. There’s a big difference between a wanting a cake with an Art Deco feel and getting one that looks like it belongs at a Sweet Sixteen in the 80s. There’s a sweet spot when it comes to wedding cakes that not all designers get…but then again you can say the same about wedding dresses, shoes, and just about everything else you’re planning for.
When it comes to picking the perfect wedding cake for you I HIGHLY suggest spending time on sites like this and Pinterest to find a clear idea of what you’re looking for. For instance, I fell in love with a wedding cake I saw in Martha Stewart Weddings, and as soon as I found a cake designer I sent them the photo to see if they could replicate it. There’s no shame in copying somebody else’s wedding cake! However, if you’re working with a great cake designer whom you trust and whose work you love, I would definitely ask for suggestions and fun ideas. But just like getting a haircut, it never hurts to bring a photo in that you like.
To spark your imagination I’ve collection a few amazing wedding cake designs I found on Pinterest. I think they all strike a great balance between being really interesting without being too opulent (except for a couple of them, which might fall into that category [in a good way!]). As a side note, I don’t think a cake has to have color or a lot of accessories to be special (the white cake below with white geometric stripes makes just as much of a statement, albeit a bit more subtly). These wedding cakes are fun and playful and could work perfectly for a wide array of wedding themes and color palettes!
