The Daily Registry: This Luggage is Awesome

There are certain purchases that I have been completely lax on making in my life (so far). These include (but are not limited to) decent workout shoes, nice flatware, and good luggage. Yes, I DID register for luggage when we got married, but I registered for luggage that was WAY TOO BIG (30″), and whenever we checked it we got charged an overweight fee. So, goodbye to that!

So, for the past 5 years I’ve been wheeling around an old suitcase my parents gave me over 15 years ago that was ripped and only had two wheels…which if you have a 4-wheel spinner, you know how much more awesome they are.

My husband had a week-long work trip coming up earlier this year so we finally broke down and went to mall to invest in two suitcases. We wanted a carryon for versatility (and so I could be forced to learn how to NOT overpack), and a suitcase that wouldn’t break our backs.

I searched online for luggage and felt like I was searching for a needle in a haystack (which means I’ll have a post about how to shop for luggage coming up soon!), and ended up going to Macy’s to look at the options ourselves.

We narrowed down our choices to two brand–Tumi and Victorinox–based on reputation and style. Specifically, we compared the Tumi Alpha 2 22″ Continental Carry On Expandable Spinner Suitcase and the Victorinox Lexicon 22″ Domestic Carry On Expandable Spinner Suitcase. I’m by no means a luggage expert (obviously), but we ended up with the Victorinox based on the interior space, removable suiter (for hanging items), and price (it was on sale because we got last year’s model). Victorinox also has a lifetime warranty (compared to Tumi’s 5-year) which was also a huge plus. It’s also worth noting that being the dork that I am, after we bought the suitcases I ended up going into a different luggage store (where the person didn’t work on commission) and asked them about the suitcases we bought. They knew the model and said it was a great suitcase, so we ended up keeping them.

I just returned from a two-week trip where I used it, and I have to say I SUPER LOVE IT. I feel like I just left the dark ages behind by finally getting a suitcase with spinners. I literally ran a mile in the airport with this bag and it was amazingly smooth. I also–and this is the shocking part–fit two weeks worth of clothes in it (I also carried on a duffel bag…but still). I was pretty sparse with my packing so don’t think it’s going to be a miracle bag when it comes to space, but it packed and traveled great.

If you’re registering at a store like Macy’s (or even if you’re not), you should definitely take note of their luggage sales. And also, if you don’t have a Macy’s credit card I would wait to make a big purchase like this until you can sign up for one. We did and got an additional 20% off our suitcases, which combined with the other discounts they had running (there are usually a ton) our suitcase ended up costing around $340 vs. a list of over $600. So, wait for a sale!

Note: This is NOT a sponsored post…I’m just geeking out about luggage.
