How to Write a Thank You Note

how to write a thank you note

For all the wedding gifts I’ve bought for friends over the years, I STILL remember the two times I never received a thank you note. Considering how forgetful I am about a gazillion other things in my life, the fact that I still remember THAT was motivation enough for me to make sure I wrote everyone a thank you note…and promptly!

Yes, you’re going to be crazy busy before AND after the wedding, but you need to find the time to sit down (either alone or with your fiance) to get them done. As a general rule of thumb, this is the accepted timeline you have to get your thank you notes in the mail:

For gifts received BEFORE the wedding:
Thank you notes should be sent within 2 weeks

For gifts received AFTER the wedding:
Thank you notes should be sent within 6-8 weeks from your wedding date, ideally sooner.

Exactly what you should write in your thank you note gets a little trickier. The goal is to write a sincere, heartfelt note that doesn’t sound like a robot wrote it. Make sure you personalize it as much as you can. Here are a few examples of what you should/shouldn’t write:

DON’T:

Dear Uncle Bob and Aunt Grace,

Thank you for the plates. They are really great. We are looking forward to using them.

Sincerely,

Judy and Nathan

DO:

Dear Uncle Bob and Aunt Grace,

We are so happy that you were able to make it to our wedding. It was such a wonderful and special day for us, and having all of our family and friends there to help us celebrate made it even more memorable. Thank you for being a part of it.

We also wanted to thank you for the beautiful plates from Crate & Barrel. Nathan and I absolutely love them! We look forward to using them for many years to come, and will think of you every time we do. 🙂

Thank you again, and we hope to see you and the rest of the family very soon!

Love,

Judy and Nathan

Things to remember:

-If it’s before the wedding, include in the note how you are looking forward to celebrating with them. If it’s after, make sure to tell them how much you enjoyed celebrating with them.

-Include details about the gift you received, and how you plan on using it. However, if you received a check, do not include the amount. Instead, say something along the lines of…

Thank you so much for the generous wedding check. We are very appreciative, and plan on using it towards a new home soon.

If you’re looking to buy Thank You notes in bulk, you can find a pretty decent selection at Target, who even has letterpress options from time to time. You can also order them at the same time as your invites if you want to have a unifying theme. Be sure to order more than you think you need, as you’re bound to make mistakes. One way to avoid that is to write out what you’re going to say beforehand on another sheet of paper. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.
