If you’re getting married in 2019, you’ve almost certainly considered traveling to popular destinations like Hawaii or Cancun for your honeymoon — but why not go somewhere a bit more adventurous? Whether it’s Japan’s “spiritual heartland” in Wakayama Prefecture, the Kokrobite beaches along the Gulf of Guinea in Ghana, or the picturesque hill region on Spain’s southern coast in Andalusia, according to Airbnb, there are too many trending places to travel to that you won’t want to miss.
The only problem? You’ll probably have a hard time choosing just one off of Airbnb’s list. To generate the compilation of trending destinations, the company — which allows people to arrange or offer lodging around the world — used a combination of data from searches on the site, bookings, and people’s wish lists.
“Ranging from a vehicle-free island off the coast of southeastern China’s Xiamen, to the site of Woodstock’s 50th anniversary celebration next year, we’ve found that most of our trending destinations are places where the increased ‘healthy,’ more sustainable and authentic tourism will benefit residents and travelers alike, promoting emerging locales like Accra, Ghana; supporting environmental sustainability in places like Calabria, Italy; and offering the chance to help rebuild communities after natural disasters, starting with the top-trending destination on our list: Kaikoura, New Zealand,” said Airbnb in the report.
Check out all 19 destinations below.
Kaikoura, New Zealand
Like Airbnb said, this coastal town in the South Island is their No. 1 destination for 2019. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake destroyed much of the area in 2016, but Kaikoura is already on the up and up. You’ll not only be contributing to the rebuilding of the community, but you’ll also get to experience the area’s beauty and see a ton of whales and seals.
You don’t have to sacrifice the city for islands, or vice-versa, with this destination. But if you’re looking for something a bit more remote, Xiamen is also home to Kulangsu, and island that caters to pedestrians by being free of vehicles. The seafood is supposed to be incredible, too!
Not too far from Mexico City, Puebla is home to beautiful architecture, food, and fun outings like live lucha libre events.
Normandy is a great alternative — or even addition — to a Paris honeymoon, since the city is only two hours away. Plus, in 2019, Normandy will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
Great Smoky Mountains, U.S.
Proof that you don’t even have to travel that far to experience a trending destination, the Smokies have 800 miles of trails ready to be explored. The mountains are also home to America’s most visited national park and year-round activities.
Buenos Aires Province, Argentina
This province spans the Atlantic coast with beaches and forests alike. You won’t even feel guilty shopping at the bustling craft market thanks to the value of the U.S. dollar relative to the peso.
In addition to the Kokrobite beaches mentioned before, West Africa’s Atlantic coast boasts exciting nightlife, the famous Makola Market, and much, much more.
Looking to go scuba diving or snorkeling? This is the place, especially since the Indian Ocean surrounding Mozambique is home to 2,000 types of colorful fish. Nature lovers won’t want to miss these islands.
Outer Hebrides, Scotland
Upon landing at the Barra Airport, you’ll likely be greeted with applause since it’s one of the only commercial airports in the world where planes land on the beach. What better way to start off your trip?! The island chain has a wide variety of wildlife — from red deer to golden eagles — and plenty of nature to enjoy.
Wakayama Prefecture, Japan
Retreat into the mountains where you can even stay in the 52 temples on holy Buddhist grounds in Koyasan. Here, you can meditate, participate in temple services, explore the gardens, and experience vegetarian cuisine. Sennin-buro in Kawayu is also home to the country’s largest open-air baths.
Catskill Mountains and Hudson Valley, U.S.
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, and according to Airbnb, a number of famous musicians and groups are rumored to be performing! The Catskills also offer hiking trails, rich wildlife, vineyards, orchards, farms, and more.
Santa Catarina State, Brazil
Panoramic mountain views and beaches make up this state, which is also home to plenty of history. If you and your S.O. are beer lovers, you won’t want to miss Blumenau. Not only is there a Beer Museum, but an Oktoberfest parade takes place every year, too.
Get lost in Winnipeg’s culture, whether it’s by wandering through The Forks’ warehouses transformed into shops and restaurants or by visiting the modern Museum for Human Rights. There’s no shortage of things to do in one of the largest cities in Canada!
This coastal town is known as the French capital of India, and is only a short drive from the state capital of Chennai. You might not even want to venture out, though, due to the wide variety of activities available, from scuba diving to exploring the world’s second largest mangrove jungle, Pichavaram Mangrove Forest.
If you don’t want to bet on the weather, head to Uzbekistan where it’s sunny 300 days out of the year. The destination is a great combination of history and modernity, too.
Opt for Calabria over Rome or Florence. Located at the toe of the country’s boot, the region boasts mountains, national parks, medieval villages, an expansive coastline, and more.
This hill region on Spain’s southern coast is home to the cities of Granada, Cordoba, and Seville. You’ll experience some of the most beautiful architecture you’ve ever seen.
According to Airbnb, the eastern districts of Daxi and Yujing are starting to appear on more and more people’s wish lists. Due to their culinary and historic attractions, this certainly makes sense.
