Wedding Song of the Week: I’ll Try Anything Once

The Strokes will forever be one of those bands that totally captured a moment in time for me. I had just moved to New York City in 2000, and was working at Rolling Stone magazine. I was lucky enough to get invited to see lots of up-and-coming bands, and The Strokes was one of them. They immediately blew me away (and pretty much anybody that got to hear them), and they felt like one of those great local bands that only YOU know about. I remember I had bought one of their t-shirts at an early show at Bowery Ballroom, and was wearing it on the subway the next day. A girl came up to me and said “You know The Strokes?! That’s my friend’s band!” They were still that small yet cult-like. But not for long.

I loved their first album, Is This It, but admittedly failed to remain a die-hard fan after that. However, I still love a lot of their newish songs. I was driving home tonight and heard the “I’ll Try Anything Once” demo on Sirius XM, a B-side from their “Heart in a Cage” single off their third album, First Impressions of Earth. I don’t think I’ve ever fully listened to this song (or at least not in the car when it had my full attention), but it completely captures everything that’s amazing about that band and Julian Casablanca’s voice.

If I was a cooler person, this song would have been a contender for our first dance. If you like The Strokes and you’re looking for a wedding song, this might be the one for you.

Wedding Song of the Week: Holocene

Ugh. This song and video is so beautiful. I completely broke down the first time I saw it (but maybe I was just PMS’ing). It manages to capture all the wonder and freedom you feel when you’re younger, that you always seem to try and recapture (somewhat unsuccessfully) as you grow up. Or at least it makes me feel that way.

The lyrics don’t have any particularly romantic meaning, and there’s an f-bomb in the beginning as well. But I still think this would be an amazing song for you or the wedding party to walk down the aisle to. Talk to your DJ about having it start after the 1:30 mark, or ask him if he can somehow edit the curse word out (if you care about that…some people don’t.) I’d feel a little weird knowing some relative might be like “Whaaaa? Henry! Did they just say the word ‘fuck?’”

Wedding Song of the Week: Lucky Man

Certain songs from certain times of life just sort of make my stomach flutter…and this is one of them. My husband danced to this song with his mom and step-mom*, though I think it can work just as well for a first-dance song. *Helpful Hint: If you’re a bride or groom and have a step-parent, instead of having a separate first-dance song with them, prevent guests from being bored to first-dance tears by splitting the song. My husband danced the first half of this song with his biological mother, and the second half with his step-mom.

Wedding Song of the Week: Covers of Sweet Child O’ Mine

This is one of those songs that the instant it comes on, everybody (including your Uncle) is going to recognize it. While I love the original, and have even been known to break out into a full-blown Axl impersonation when it comes on (who doesn’t?!), there’s something about covers of this song that I like even more…especially for weddings. There are two versions here…

The first one is from the Vitamin String Quartet, which if you haven’t heard of them before, check out their YouTube page for lots of great wedding cover options. This song could be a fun choice for your processional, your groom’s, or the wedding party’s.

This other cover, by the band Luna, is one of my favorites. I think it’s a great first dance option…
