Reception Decor: Composer Busts

Mini composer busts halbe

I’ve talked about my love (obsession?) for Beethoven before, so finding these awesome and inexpensive statues via Country Living magazine totally made my day. These mini composer busts were apparently popular and mass-produced in the 1950s-1970s, and were usually gifts from piano teachers to their students (my piano teacher never gave me something awesome! I guess the trend stopped by the 90s). A brief online search turned up several collections of these available via eBay and Etsy for as low as $4/statue. They are small (typically 5″), and either made of chalkware, vinyl, or porcelain, and they were made by several different manufacturers. Halbe seems to be the most popular on eBay, but I think a deep-dive could turn up other brands (Country Living mentioned they got theirs from Herco Industries.

I think these could be great as part of your reception table decor, and you could group two on a table in between flower arrangements or another creative centerpiece. After the wedding, you can display them on a bookshelf as part of a fun design. If you were having a smaller wedding you could even give them away as wedding favors, especially if they’re only $4/each.

Wedding Table Essentials: Vintage Hankies

When I was planning our wedding, I wrote about possibly using handkerchiefs as favors. I still love this idea, especially if you can find a way to cheaply monogram them with each guests’ initials (even though this would probably be a giant pain in the ass and not worth it.) While I found some good deals back then, the recent issue of Country Living magazine has an even better deal, below. And, instead of using them as favors, I think these hankies would be great dinner napkins for a vintage-y wedding. At $2/each, it’s hard to find patterned napkins for any cheaper!

Reception Decor: Feather Placecard Holders

If you’re into vintage housewares and clever ideas (I mean, who isn’t?) I seriously suggest you subscribe to Country Living magazine. I know, I’ve talked about them a million times, but I really love that mag. I find something cute for my apartment or for this site in every issue, like this feather place card holder, pictured above, which appeared in their November issue.

The feather is from createforless.com, and you can buy a pack of 18 feathers for $1.84. You would then hot glue a bar pin to the back of the feather (you can buy hot glue guns at Michael’s). Next, in order for it to stand on a table, you would need to buy corks ($16.95 for 50) and magnets. You would hot-glue the magnet to the cork, and then slide the place card between the pin and the magnet so it stays put.

It sounds difficult, but I bet once you get in the swing of it, you’ll have 100+ done in no time (said by the girl who is allergic to crafts).

Reception Decor: Kerosene Lanterns

I’m down in Miami visiting the folks this week, and am loving all the new restaurants I’ve been trying the past few days. Last night we went to an amazing Greek restaurant called Mandolin in the Design District, and I loved everything about it…right down to the lanterns on the table. We sat outside in the restaurant’s garden, and they had these cute and functional kerosene lanterns on every table. I think they’re a great, inexpensive option for an outside wedding, or even an inside wedding with a rustic theme. You can find them for as low as $9 on Amazon, or at a local sporting goods/army navy surplus store. Bonus? You can use them in your backyard or throughout your house after the wedding! Compared to how much candelabras or other candle holders can cost, these are a great-looking steal.
