The Report:

Wide brick walkways, wisteria, succulents, and tons of other seasonal flowers and foliage adorn the 2.2 acres that Sherman Library and Gardens sits on. The venue is open to the public every day from 10:30 to 4:00 p.m., but private events can start by 4:30. Baskets of begonias hang overhead in the Tea Garden Patio, where most wedding ceremonies take place, and the Pepper Tree Patio is normally a good spot for a cocktail hour and passed hors d’oeuvres. For indoor receptions there is the Central Patio, with a cathedral ceiling, painted mosaic tiles, and terra cotta floors.

Woman Getting Married Says:

If you’re looking for a backyard-inspired, intimate, garden wedding I would definitely check this venue out. Considering the somewhat reasonable rental fee (despite the fact that it doesn’t include anything) and standard catering options, you can spend a bit more money on things like chairs and linens and little details that will look great in the gardens (like vintage serveware). My main hesitation is the curfew and lack of liquor license. If you have the option (and have friends/family that enjoy drinking, like I do),  I think it’s always a good idea when possible to have a full bar at your wedding. I also hate having to shut down a party early, and the 9 p.m. last call seems a bit early, especially when you’re not starting your ceremony until 4:30 or 5. That means you’re essentially paying $1,000/hour to use the space. When you look at it that way, it seems a bit more expensive. Worth a trip, but I would see what kind of negotiating you’re able to do (either on the curfew or overall price).

 The Report:

Located on the campus of California State University in Long Beach, the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is situated on 1.3 acres. The landscape architect, Ed Lovell, took inspiration from the Imperial Gardens in Tokyo before designing it. The garden was built in 1981 with money donated by Loraine Miller Collins, who dedicated it to the memory of her husband, Earl. It serves as an outdoor study area for students as well as student mentoring. When it was built, Mrs. Collins wrote about her inspiration for the garden. She said:

“I have a dream for this garden. When a person is tired, or anxious, or in a quest of beauty, may they enter and come forth refreshed to meet the problems of the day. There will be music of the wind through the pines, music from the waterfalls and the birds. There will be serenity as you walk around the lake, and joy, I hope, in the beauty of the reflections in that lake. There will be iris and azaleas in the Spring. Flowering magnolia in Summer. In the Fall, chrysanthemums and the gold of the liquid amber trees. There will be strength and solidity in the rocks and the wooden bridges. And, of course, there will be bamboo, a favorite wood of the Japanese because it is so useful and beautiful. There is an old proverb that says, ‘Bamboo bends but never breaks.’ It is my hope that as you leave your tour of the garden, you will find in your heart that proverb, and the day will be filled with joy.” – Loraine Miller Collins

Woman Getting Married Says:

With a koi pond and bridge connecting either side, the garden looks like a mix between Monet’s garden at Giverny and the architect’s Japanese inspiration (well, maybe just a little). While it’s gorgeous, it’s not necessarily built with weddings in mind. The space can be choppy and there are no indoor options, which I’m not a fan of. Couples typically get married on the bridge with a microphone, and guests are seated in various locations around it. There is not one big space for all the guests to sit and eat, so things will be a bit broken up which can be less than ideal for the flow of a wedding, especially one on the larger side. There also seem to be a set of strict rules which can be a pain in the butt, such as the $50 fee if your bridal party is late to the rehearsal and the “children must be gone by dusk” rule. While it’s beautiful, I think you still might need to spend some money to make it look a bit more unique and add to the design (such as different chairs). However, the rental fee is not insane and the outdoor setting can be beautiful if the weather is nice.

 The Report:

This Beaux Arts mansion with an Italian Renaissance design was built in the heart of San Francisco by James Leary Flood for his wife, Maud. He hired renowned architects Bliss & Faville to begin construction of the “house of marble on a hill of granite” after Maud became concerned about living in a city that was devastated by the Great Quake of 1906. After her husband’s death, Maud gave the home to the Religious of the Sacred Heart. It is now part of the Broadway campus of Schools of the Sacred Heart. The total square footage available for rental is 11,000 sq. feet, and includes a “Grand Hall”, a courtyard, as well as several smaller rooms.

Woman Getting Married Says:

The venue fee at this incredible mansion is pricey, but if you’re looking for a ceremony/reception in a memorable venue in San Francisco, this could be it. My main gripe with the venue would be the forced end time of 10:00 p.m. (after party, anyone?) as well as complaints of a narrow reception hall and loud acoustics. I hate having to end a wedding early, but if you start at 4  or 5 p.m. it might not be a bad idea. I would opt for a slight smaller guest list at this venue to make up for the potentially cramped reception areas (and to help offset the costs of the venue rental fee).

How to Rent an Estate For Your Wedding

Let me start off by saying I love this idea. I think getting married in a non-traditional venue such as an estate is ideal…it’s like you have a super rich Uncle that has an amazing house and he’s like, “Come! Get married here! It would be my pleasure!” Except, in this situation that imaginary Uncle is super cheap and is making you pay for it. But whatever. The bottom line is: renting an estate is expensive, but it’s not crazy out of reach if you have a $30k budget or more.

I stumbled across the website Estate Weddings and Events the other week in my search for unique venues across the U.S. I think their website does a great job of giving you the information you need…it’s easy to navigate, shows great images, and gives you a lot of stats. You can browse by location, event type, capacity, and price. And on a side note, they were extremely responsive when I dealt with them. A big plus.

I’ve never had an event at one of their estates, but I do think there’s a need for a service like this. When I was scouting venues in Miami for my wedding, I had to go through a caterer to find available spaces. This is way more convenient, and it gives you a choice when it comes to selecting vendors.

The company lists available estates throughout the country, and prices vary. The houses are individually-owned, and are put through a pre-qualifying process before they are listed. You can opt for a full-service package which includes catering, or you can bring in your own caterer for a $1,000 fee. On average, it looks like 50 guests with the outside caterer fee will run you around $3,500 for the site rental only. For 100 guests you’re looking at around $6,000, and it goes all the way up to $10,000 and more depending on the estate. Events are given a 5-hour time limit, with time for vendors to start coming in as early as that morning to set up. You also have to pay a $500 cleanup fee. Some locations allow for overnight accommodations. One estate with 6 bedrooms was listed at $700/night total.

Below is one of the estates I received information on, which gives you a good range of how much a smaller one would cost:

The Emma Estate

Location: Rancho Santa Fe, San Diego

Size: Up to 300 seated, 400 cocktail-style

Standard Rental Fee (includes $1,000 outside caterer fee):

  • Up to 50 guests -$3,500
  • 51-100 guests- $5,000
  • 101-150 guests- $6,500
  • 151+ guests- $8,000

Average Price :  $24,000

(price includes tax and service charges. Does not include additional decor)

How it breaks down:

Site Rental: $4,000 ($1,000 was deducted from the standard fee for using their caterer)

Food/Equipment: $105/pp

Includes:

  • 100 person guest list
  • Access to estate from 12 p.m.-12 a.m. Event service from 5 p.m.-10 p.m.. Events must end at 10 p.m. due to noise ordinances.
  • Seated dinner (3 tray passed hors d’oeuvres, choice of one salad and 2 entree selections)
  • Equipment rentals (Chiavari chairs, linens, 5 cocktail tables, china, dance flor, round or banquet tables, 2 display tables, water and champagne stemware)
Beverage: $38/pp
  • Top shelf bar for 5 hours
Additional:
  • Service Fee @ 20%
  • Sales Tax @ 7.75%
  • Cleaning fee: $500
  • Valet: $900
  • Day of coordination: $500

For this particular estate, there are three bathrooms, so you don’t have to worry about lines being too long. For a guest count over 150, they will supply additional “luxury” bathrooms, which I’m only assuming are gold-plated Port-O-Potties? I can dare to dream!
