Registry Offender

I have registered and un-registrered and registered again at 6 different store websites. I have signed up and deleted my account at several Universal Registries. I am completely convinced there is a science to creating the perfect registry, and I will not rest until I have found the formula…

I should register for a life.

BUT, my OCD quest will only help you, my fellow brides-to-be. Because I’ve been keeping copious notes, let me fill you in on what I’ve observed in the land of free shopping…otherwise know as The Wedding Registry.

Observation #1:

Universal Registries suck. Yes, the idea of them is brilliant. Register at ANY store you want, no matter how large or small, thus making your gift list unique and totally “you.” The problem is this: As a guest viewing your registry list, they are not able to select several smaller items to create a gift “package,” as many people do. Say your Aunt wants to buy you every baking gadget you’ve registered for…well, the problem is when viewing your Universal Registry list, you cannot check-off every item you want to give without it being considered a separate transaction. Yes, you can pull in your entire Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn registries into the Universal one, but if Cousin Bobby sees one gift he wants from PB, and another one from CB, he has to pay for two different shipping costs, which is a real pain in the ass. Also, most of the Universal Registries are designed so poorly, most people can’t even figure out where to send your gift to once they select it.

If you HAVE to have a Universal Registry, the least retarded one I used was MyRegistry.com. Though don’t say I never warned you.

Observation #2:

The Registry is Where the Home Is. In other words, you should only register at stores where you live. Having just moved from NYC, I happen to love Crate and Barrel and Bloomingdales, which had several locations in the city. However, now that I live in Nashville we have neither of those chains. While I can easily order from them online, if I want to return something I have to ship it back. Neither of those stores offer free returns, so I’ll end up paying money on the items I don’t like. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be schlepping back and forth to the post office. I’d much rather have to go to the mall.

Observation #3:

Be choosy. If it were up to me, I would be registered at 6 different stores. But a) it’s too confusing for guests, b) there’s that whole Universal Registries suck observation, and c) too many store options means some of the items you REALLY want/need will be overlooked. You should ideally keep it to two different stores, with a max of three. Deciding which two or three stores you want to include is the biggest decision…WHAT you want to get is the easiest part. After all, you know how to shop!

V for Valentine’s Day

Back when I was single, Valentine’s Day was all about me. Who’s going to be my date for V-Day? What is he going to get me? Did that gift mean he really, really liked me? Now that I’ve been with my Future Husband (FH) for over two years, Valentine’s Day has become much less important. Sure, we’ll go out to dinner and even exchange a gift or two…but since we’ve been living together, the need to “impress” the other person or the wish to “be impressed” with romance and gifts has dwindled. It’s also become easier to focus on some of the annoying male habits (hello, toilet seat) FH possesses, instead of the amazing ones.

This V-day, I want to do something I don’t do enough: Take a moment to actually appreciate my FH. I don’t want to buy him heart boxers or go for another fancy meal…I just want to take a day to forget about the socks left on the floor, the nail clippings in the bathroom sink, the beard hairs on the floor….and start appreciating all the wonderful things my FH does and realize how truly lucky I am. To do this, I made a list…

Happy V-day FH…let your nail clippings run free! I love you.

The FH Appreciation List

  1. When I have cramps, he lovingly rubs my belly in the hopes of making them go away.
  2. –then he’ll drive to the store to get me Advil and tampons.
  3. When I cook, he always does the dishes.
  4. When I say something funny, he’ll laugh, look at me and say: “I love you.”
  5. Before we leave to go out at night, he always says “You look great!”
  6. He’ll watch Project Runway with me without complaining
  7. When we’re on a sidewalk, he always walks on the side closest to the cars because “he wants me to be safe.”
  8. When it’s raining, he drops me off in front of the door.
  9. He’s generous…with me, with waiters, with his family.
  10. When my mom calls me for the 10th time that day, he doesn’t get annoyed.
  11. When I do the laundry, he actually THANKS me.
  12. When I’m having a work, family, or hormone crisis, he always asks “Is there anything I can to do help?”
  13. When the alarm goes off in the morning, he’s always gets up to turn it off.

To be continued…

xoxo

Daily Registry: Champagne Glasses

At the moment, I’m hooked on champagne and prosecco. It’s the perfect pre-dinner drink, or to start a night out. Before we got engaged, we were drinking our champagne out of water glasses (classy!). Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I just think a nice drink glass goes a looooong way. We haven’t picked out our wine glasses yet (stay tuned), but we actually received these Tiffany champagne glasses as a gift and I really love them. I’m super picky about shape/stem-length, and I think these are perfect. Keep in mind, they are crystal and therefore delicate, which I had to find out the hard way. But otherwise, I think they make a great registry pick!

P.S.: While I wasn’t crazy about most of Tiffany’s home items (their jewelry and most of their plates, etc. are way overpriced) there is something to be said about opening that big, blue box. It was weirdly fun.
