My New Favorite Designer: Gordana from Project Runway

I’ve never really gotten into Project Runway. Don’t get me wrong…I LIKE it, and I’ve seen several episodes, but it’s never gotten me hooked. However, I am now completely hooked on one of the show’s designers, Gordana Gehlhausen, after I happened upon her new store in Santa Monica last week.

Let me preface this by saying I love clothes and fashion, but I’m not willing to pay crazy designer prices. So that means I end up doing most of my shopping at stores like J.Crew, Gap, Banana Republic, Anthropologie, and maybe the occasional online designer sale. But seriously, aside from a collection of vintage clothes I bought in college, my closet is chain-store all the way. I also get discouraged buying clothes because I’m tall (6′ 1″), and unless you’re buying super high-end, it’s hard to buy stuff that fits without having to alter it, or be forced to choose from the store’s measely selection of ‘Tall’ clothes (gag).

So when I went out looking for a new outfit to wear to dinner last Friday night and saw Gordana Gehlhausen’s new store, Goga, on Main Street in Santa Monica (she has another store in San Diego) I thought it was probably too expensive but I would go in and just get some ideas. Gordana was there (as evidenced by some of the fans that would stop in), and was making dresses towards the back. I started browsing around, and literally fell in love with pretty much all of her designs. Also, her prices. Everything was, shockingly, extremely well priced. This meant I could actually try stuff on!

During the course of my visit there, the extremely nice Gordana helped piece together some outfits for me (super fun, btw), and paired things together that I would have never thought of, but that looked great. It’s easy to forget that sometimes all you need to update your look is somebody else’s eyes (albeit, talented eyes like Gordana). She even offered for me to bring in clothes I already had at home that I was bored with, and she would help me think of ways to wear them. Can we say love? Also, for you tall ladies out there…everything fit me GREAT. I’m telling you, I felt like I hit the jackpot.

Before I go into too long of a gush fest, I’ll just say that if you’re in Santa Monica or San Diego, I HIGHLY suggest going into her store, not only for everyday pieces but to talk to her about custom wedding dress or bridesmaid designs. Her website doesn’t do her clothes justice, so I would go and check them out yourself. I’m already saving up for my next trip.

Wedding Dresses Under $1,000: Tadashi Shoji +Robert Rodriguez

I’m on a little bit of a Nordstrom kick. We FINALLY got one in Nashville, and I love it. The store is nice to be in, the sales people are super friendly, there’s a great collection of Size 10 and 11 shoes…what more can I ask for?

After visiting the store and their website, I’ve noticed some great finds for bridesmaids dresses (the previous post, below, has one) as well as dresses that could easily look great for a wedding. I saw this Tadashi Shoji dress (from their latest Spring 2012 collection) online and thought it was gorgeous. I also saw this Robert Rodriguez dress in the store tonight, and it’s way more gorgeous in person. If you’re looking for a more casual/daytime/even beachy dress, this would be perfect. Bonus? They’re both under $1,000 (even way under, in the case of the Rodriguez dress).

1920′s Wedding Dresses

A friend of mine who is engaged recently started her search for the perfect wedding dress, and asked if I could send some ideas her way. As we all know, finding THE wedding dress is one of the hardest parts of planing a wedding (but admittedly, the most fun). Her request? “A ’20s-bohemian-style wedding dress with a simple silhouette but a hint of pizazz.” I thought I would start a search to see what kind of dresses I could find that fit the bill, and that came in under $2,000 (an ideal wedding dress budget, I think).

When looking for a vintage-style wedding dress, one of the first things you should do is decide which era you like best. For example, the 1920′s was all about straight-lines, knee and calf-lengths, dropped and free-flowing waists, and simple and more lightweight silhouettes. (the 1940′s, for example, was also a simple decade, but dresses had broader sleeves and more cinched waists.)

Granted, you can take cues from a past decade for your wedding dress, but you don’t necessarily have to find an exact replica. You can look for dresses that have a 1920′s vibe, without looking like you’re going to enter a costume contest!

Here’s some ideas I sent to her:

  • I am obsessed with Yolan Cris’s designs. They don’t sell in the U.S. yet, but they are great to use as inspiration, and to show bridal boutiques in your neighborhood to see if they can come up with any dresses with the same look. The Yolan Cris “Colección Revival Vintage” is GORGEOUS.
  • The Vintage Wedding Dress Company, which sells only out of its London store, is another great place to find inspiration. Their vintage dress recreations (broken down by decade) are beautiful, and a great excuse to suddenly plan a London vacation!
  • Claire Pettibone is a really great designer doing vintage-style wedding dresses, with lace and simple silhouettes. She has a good selection of dresses under $2,000.

  • Google is your friend. A search for “vintage 1920′s wedding dresses” will pull up a lot of junk, but it will also pull up a couple winners. If you’re looking for a less formal dress that can be worn again and again, something like this 1920′s-style dress from LeLuxe would be great.

Wedding Dress Designer: Justin Alexander

Justin Alexander, 8530, from the Spring 2011 collection

Designer: Justin Alexander

Price: Justin Alexander wedding dresses range from $1,000-$2,000 and up.

About: There are three bridal lines: Justin Alexander, Justin Alexander Signature, and Pure by Justin Alexander, which is a line of all-organic dresses. From what I can research, there is no “Justin Alexander,” but instead there are a team of designers who work on the line, which is distributed to select retailers worldwide.
My favorite dresses from these collections are the tea-length ones, which you don’t see a ton of out there, and that I think are perfect for garden weddings with a vintage flair. I also love the dresses with lace detail (you know I’m a fanatic for lace!). This designer line is a great option if you’re looking for a classic, well-made dress that doesn’t break the bank but still has a touch of creativity.
Check out the Best Bridal Boutiques guide to see if a store in your area carries the line.
