Let me preface this by saying I’m not totally sure what’s going on here. I stumbled across a post on Reddit today announcing that our favorite store for cheap wedding decor and furniture was launching a “wedding” online. I immediately got excited thinking they were starting a new line of disposable wedding crafts, but instead was directed to this page and a video (with subtitles) giving a brief overview of their new service.
It asks, “Where do you want to get married? Perhaps you’re imagining a wedding on a perfect beach with a light summer breeze? Or on a boat? Or in a magical forest straight out of a fairy tale? Now you can get married anywhere you like, with Wedding Online.”
IKEA’s new wedding tool turns out to be some sort of video conferencing software that allows guests to witness your wedding without leaving their desks. That way you and your future spouse (and whoever else you’ve chosen to invite), can get married in the location of your choice without having to worry about inviting a massive guest list (or those family members who can’t travel?).
This service appears to only be available in Sweden at the moment, but I’m guessing it will roll out in other countries soon. According to their FAQ, in order to host a wedding with their new tool you will need a computer with a Flash Player, a microphone and a webcam (or a computer with an external webcam installed). You will have access to your wedding for 6 hours, after which time they will have to take you offline to accommodate other weddings. Also, your wedding is apparently public, though they won’t advertise the link.
The idea seems kind of cool…but I’m not sure what to think of it! I feel like a Grandma because this seems like the most futuristic thing ever to me…aside from a flying car. I get that it’s just like Skype, but the way they’re setting it up seems way different to me.
What do you think of this new tool? Would you use it?
