Alternative Flower Decorations

I’m typically not a fan of fake or dried flowers, even though they can often make a more realistic (and cost-friendly) alternative to real flowers. I think this stems (no pun intended) from years ago when I was obsessed with anything having to do with Feng Shui, and read that dried and plastic flowers (unless they were silk) were bad for your home. While I’ve stayed away from them since, there are a couple exceptions to this rule that I think would make great additions to your wedding decor (and are good Feng Shui to boot).

The first is lavender. I recently saw dried lavender on top of a cake and loved the casual and country chic look of it. Lavender, for those still interested in the Feng Shui angle, is both a flower AND an herb. And, since dried herbs can be considered good Feng Shui, they wouldn’t technically be bad just because they’re dried. Using dried lavender stalks on top of a cake is a simple, DIY cake decoration. You can buy them online here

While on the same website that sells the dried lavender, I stumbled across these gorgeous flowers made out of tapioca wood. While they’re technically fake flowers (which is a Feng Shui no-no), they’re made out of wood rather than plastic. Since wood is a natural element, this is a workaround you could get away with. These would be beautiful in a bouquet, in a centerpiece, or used as some sort of garland. You can buy them here.

For those of you interested in Feng Shui, a great beginner’s book is Lillian Too’s Easy-to-Use Feng Shui. It’s especially useful if you’re moving into a new house or apartment and want to get some good mojo flowing! I often found it interesting that a lot of my instincts for how to arrange furniture or what to pack/get rid of always seem to be rooted in the same school of thought. If you’re OCD like me, it’s the perfect guidebook! LOL.

Reception Decor: Cotton Flowers

I cannot tell you how long I’ve been SEARCHING for these cotton flowers! You would think they would be relatively easy to find, considering I see them growing in fields all throughout the South, but they’re not. So, I was super surprised and excited to stumble across them while I was looking for Christmas Ornaments last night.

ShopTerrain.com, which has a great selection of rustic chic products for you and your home, is selling cotton stems (that are fairly large) for a decent price. If you’re buying in bulk (like for a wedding) it wouldn’t hurt to reach out to them and see if you can get a discount. I just bought 5 for a home arrangement, so I’ll take a picture of them when I get them set up.

I think cotton flowers are a great addition to a country/rustic/vintage wedding. In my dream world I would pair them with these Pottery Barn vintage oversized wine bottles, but at $99-$279/each, that’s not happening. Instead, I would suggest you go to TJMaxx Home Goods and look for unique tall vases with a rustic feel. Or, you can buy a plain gallon jug here for as low as $3.11 each!

Wedding Table Essentials: Vintage Hankies

When I was planning our wedding, I wrote about possibly using handkerchiefs as favors. I still love this idea, especially if you can find a way to cheaply monogram them with each guests’ initials (even though this would probably be a giant pain in the ass and not worth it.) While I found some good deals back then, the recent issue of Country Living magazine has an even better deal, below. And, instead of using them as favors, I think these hankies would be great dinner napkins for a vintage-y wedding. At $2/each, it’s hard to find patterned napkins for any cheaper!

Reception Decor: Recycled Bicycle Candelabras

I don’t know if this catalogue I just received is the weirdest or best one ever. It’s such a random assortment of products, yet they all seem to kind of go together. The theme is “recycled and rustic,” and some items are pretty awesome.  The At West End catalogue might have to go into my monthly rotation.
There’s a couple great wedding reception candelabra options in the 2011 catalogue, pictured above and below. Considering that my wedding candelabra’s cost $39/each to RENT (and that was considered a steal), at $59/each you can buy these and either sell them after your wedding, or pawn them off to family/friends as Thank You gifts.

Various sizes (like this one and the one above): $59
