Reception Decor: Composer Busts

Mini composer busts halbe

I’ve talked about my love (obsession?) for Beethoven before, so finding these awesome and inexpensive statues via Country Living magazine totally made my day. These mini composer busts were apparently popular and mass-produced in the 1950s-1970s, and were usually gifts from piano teachers to their students (my piano teacher never gave me something awesome! I guess the trend stopped by the 90s). A brief online search turned up several collections of these available via eBay and Etsy for as low as $4/statue. They are small (typically 5″), and either made of chalkware, vinyl, or porcelain, and they were made by several different manufacturers. Halbe seems to be the most popular on eBay, but I think a deep-dive could turn up other brands (Country Living mentioned they got theirs from Herco Industries.

I think these could be great as part of your reception table decor, and you could group two on a table in between flower arrangements or another creative centerpiece. After the wedding, you can display them on a bookshelf as part of a fun design. If you were having a smaller wedding you could even give them away as wedding favors, especially if they’re only $4/each.

Wedding Table Essentials: Vintage Hankies

When I was planning our wedding, I wrote about possibly using handkerchiefs as favors. I still love this idea, especially if you can find a way to cheaply monogram them with each guests’ initials (even though this would probably be a giant pain in the ass and not worth it.) While I found some good deals back then, the recent issue of Country Living magazine has an even better deal, below. And, instead of using them as favors, I think these hankies would be great dinner napkins for a vintage-y wedding. At $2/each, it’s hard to find patterned napkins for any cheaper!

Funny Wedding Favors: Cocktail Napkins

Honestly, most wedding favors are SUPER boring. Either it’s a piece of chocolate (great, thanks for making me fat), something with YOUR initials on it (why would I want that?), or another item that you spent a lot of money on that I had to figure out how to get rid of. If you’re going to do wedding favors, make them something I will actually use when I get home (like these practical wedding favors).

These hysterical cocktail napkins, below, are definitely something I would use when I got home. When we have people over and I’m in a mad dash to get ready minutes before, I’m always happy when I realize I have some cocktail napkins to put out. You can honestly never have enough cocktail napkins (OK, maybe you can…but I haven’t reached that limit yet), especially ones that are bound to be conversation starters.

If the theme of your wedding is vintage/carnival/or anything else with personality, not only would funny cocktail napkins (like these MikWright napkins, below) be a great favor for guests as they leave (arranged in a cute basket), but they would be great if you placed them at your wedding bars as well. That way people can see them and get extra excited when they realize they get to take some home. I mean, they probably won’t pee in their pants from excitement over this wedding favor you got them, but you get the idea.

You can find some cute ones at YouNeedaDrink.com, from $2.00 and up per pack.

Double Duty Reception Decor: Bottle Openers

If you’re looking for clever ways to have your reception décor double as wedding favors, this is a fun idea that’s perfect for summer weddings: Bottle openers that work for escort cards, favors, and table displays!

If you’re having a small wedding, consider purchasing vintage/used bottle openers at your local thrift store or online via sites like eBay and Etsy. If you’re having a large number of people, you’d be better off buying them from a store that sells in bulk. I love these bottle openers from Pottery Barn, below.

Arrange them on a table with escort cards tied to each. Place a bottle of brightly-colored soda (such as IZZE’S) at each guest’s place setting, which they can then open with their new bottle opener. If you want to do individual place cards, string another craft tag around each bottle with guest’s names on them. To make sure people know their bottle openers are favors, write or stamp something cute on the backside of the escort craft-tag such as “Take Me Home,” “Yours to Keep,” or “To Have and To Hold.” In addition to being cute/kitschy, the bottles offer a great pop of color to your tables.
