Inspiration Board: Immortal Beloved

Ever since I saw the movie Immortal Beloved in 1994, I’ve had a very confusing crush on Beethoven. Was it Beethoven himself that I liked, or was it just the fact that I had a crush on the actor that played him in a movie? I still don’t know. Regardless, I’ve been super into Beethoven FOR SOME REASON ever since the movie came out…reading countless biographies and even writing term papers on the composer, and of course becoming obsessed with his music. So needless to say when the movie comes on cable, which it did this week, I squeal like a little girl.

In addition to covering an interesting subject matter, the movie also captures what a gorgeous time period it was for fashion and interior design. As far as decor is concerned, the scenes I’m most obsessed with in the movie are supposed to take place between 1800-1827 (Beethoven was born in 1770, and died in 1827). During the early 1800′s, Empire dresses were in, with their raised waistlines and cap sleeves. The Chemisette, a long, flowing, Grecian-like dress, was also popular. Fashion in the early 1800′s was, in stark contrast to the ornate 18th century, more subdued and “comfortable,” with corsets being temporarily abandoned. Men’s clothing also became less ornate (but still refined), with long, tight breeches (pants), and short coats with sidetails. Hair wax became popular as wigs faded out, and “mutton chop” sideburns became all the rage. Interior design incorporated a combination of a several styles, such as Rococo, Gothic, and Chinoiserie. Popular fabrics were damask, chintz, silk and velvet, and colors often seen were sulpher yellow, crimson, deep green, and royal blue ( I love any combination of those for your wedding colors).

What better inspiration for a wedding theme than the story of an immortal love set in a gorgeous time period? Below are a few suggestions for how you can achieve the look from Immortal Beloved for your wedding.

Wedding Style: Old Kentucky Home

My lack of updates last week was actually due to the fact that I was getting ready to go to Louisville for my first-ever Kentucky Derby. We drove up on Friday and were honored to go to the Governor’s Ball that night, and then the 136th Kentucky Derby the following day. We had SUCH a great time despite the lousy weather (even though the sun did come out just in time for the 11th race. It was amazing!). While we didn’t win any money on the races, I did score a ton of ideas for a fabulous Kentucky-themed wedding. Even if you don’t live in the commonwealth, you can still steal some of its’ charm for your big day. Check out my inspiration board, below.

1. Speciality Drink: The Mint Julep

Pass around the official drink of the Derby, The Mint Julep, during your cocktail hour. I can attest to how tasty and potent these are, since I had 5 of them last Saturday. Yee-haw!

Click here for a Mint Julep recipe

2. Horseshoe decorations

$17.50 for a 10 pack

Spread these out along your reception tables for a unique touch. (They’re good luck, too!) I found this cool website where you can order old ones in bulk.

3. Get a Bluegrass band

Hiring a bluegrass band to play music before, during, and after your ceremony (particularly during cocktail hour) adds a unique twist to your Kentucky-inspired wedding. Go to GigMasters.com to find one in your area.

4. Wildflowers

The Goldenrod (Solidago altissima), a wildflower, is the official state flower of Kentucky. Ask your florist for an assortment of yellow wildlflowers (or pick your own!) for your table and bouquets, but make sure you’re not allergic to any of them first!

5. Derby-chic wedding dress

This Ivory silk crepe gown from Carolina Herrera’s Spring 2011 collection (it’s called ‘Berenice’)  is perfect for balmy Kentucky days. And, if you mimic this Carolina Herrerra look and include a statement hat in lieu of a traditional veil, you’ll be paying homage to the Kentucky Derby.

6. Use a bourbon barrel as a guestbook

$85 and up

Instead of a traditional guestbook, have guests sign an old (or new) bourbon barrel. Shipping might get a bit expensive, but how cool would it be to have an old barrel displayed in your home to remind you of your big day?

Wedding Style: Rustic Farm

As I sift through tons of magazines and websites for my own wedding “style,” I’ve begun to create inspiration boards of things I love. Not just for my own wedding, but for any woman getting married who is looking to find her own style.

One of the venues I’ve been looking at is a farm…I love the idea of bringing rustic/shabby elegance into the space. Here are a few of my ideas, below. Let me know what you think!

1. Sarah Seven wedding dress, “Peaceful Afternoon.” $515. Buy it here.

2. This vintage camera photo album from Anthropologie makes a great wedding favor for guests. $10. Buy it here.

3. Pottery Barn hanging mason jar. $7.50. Buy it here.

4. Seat your guests on rectangular hay bales instead of traditional folding chairs during the ceremony for a fun twist. (The Farm and Garden section on your local Craig’s List should have hay for sale if you’re not having your wedding at an actual, working farm.)

5. I HATE wedding chairs with a passion. But the simple addition of a burlap sash and beige linen seat cover makes this one of the best event chairs I’ve seen.

6. Rustic garden roses, which are available year-round, are a great alternative to peonies, which are only in season early April to mid June and from early November to late December. Some of my favorite varieties include Bourbon, Damask, and Musk.
