The hubs was out of town this weekend for his annual fantasy football trip (yes, this exists), which meant I got to squeeze in at least one rom-com while he was away. I just finished watching The Five Year Engagement, and it wasn’t half bad. While it’s not going to go onto my list of favorite romantic comedies ever, it was actually better than I thought it was going to be. It had some funny parts and was actually a bit darker/depressing than your average wedding rom com. However, one of the things that stood out (aside from all the Van Morrison in the movie…I love me som Van) was the gorgeous gold ruby and diamond engagement ring that Jason Segel gave Emily Blunt. It appeared to be from Cartier, and the said (in the movie) that it was vintage.
While I love the brand’s coveted red box, anything from Cartier or Tiffany’s is going to be WAY overpriced. So, if you’re looking for a colored wedding ring (or any wedding ring for that matter), be it sapphire, ruby, turquoise, diamond, etc., you’re better off going into your local jewelry district (I’m Jewish…and I’m telling you, go where the Jews are) and look around for a deal. Better yet, go into a store like Cartier and Tiffany, try a few of your favorite rings on for size, ask for pictures, prices, and stats, and bring them to another local jeweler and see if they can find something for you that’s similar. While the diamond might be a slightly lower clarity grade (if you’re not sure what that means, check out my Diamond Guide), you won’t be able to tell the difference, but your wallet will.
